Thinking About Size

The general rule for sizing a chandelier light fixture is to take the width and length of the room in feet and add them together. After changing the unit to inches, this sum is approximately the size of the chandelier you will want.  So in a 10' by 15' room, you want a chandelier design that is roughly 25" in diameter. For height, you want 2.5" to 3" for every foot of height in the room. You can find this measurement simply by taking the room's height in feet, multiplying the number by three, and changing the unit to inches. In a 12' high room, you want a chandelier that is about 36" in height. 

In a dining room, chandeliers are typically styled above the dining table. In this case, you want a chandelier that is about two-thirds the width of the table. For most tables, this will be about a foot less than the width of the dining table. While a large chandelier can be an impactful statement piece, consider styling two smaller chandeliers over a larger table for symmetrical appeal.
